The DEFINITIVE Ranking of the 2024 MLS Kits
STRAP IN, I RANKED EVERY SINGLE KIT BAYBEEEE (This entire article was written with a cat sleeping on my lap)
The people over at Adidas owe me, specifically, an apology for how awful Arsenal’s away kit was this season despite proving how well they can design jerseys with this year’s MLS rollout.
But oh man, did Adidas and the teams knock it out of the park, so of course, we’ve gotta rank ‘em:
Real Salt Lake
I’m sorry, I don’t know how else to put it. I think this kit is very bad. Am I a bit biased because I do not like RSL? A bit, but I also don’t think anything on this shirt goes together. Like choose stripes or choose mountains, you can’t have both. It doesn’t even bother to do mountains well, they’re too big and blocky (way worse than the more subtle mountains on the Rapid’s kits the last few years [yes, I’m well aware I sound like a homer {no, I will not apologize}]).
Atlanta United
The first of two kits to get leaked by their city’s basketball team (weird that it happened twice). Maybe when they release it officially, I will like it more like I did with the Pids, but the bird design seems very random. Maybe I just don’t get it because it’s an ATL thing.
LA Galaxy
I don’t know, man, I know it’s kinda their thing, but I think sashes are kind of bad-looking. And if you’re going to do it, at least commit to it!!!! They kinda tried here, not great.
FC Dallas
PSA to every designer: GRADIANTS LOOK BAD!!!! At least they tried something interesting, but it’s even worse on that back of the kit because they abandoned it altogether and just went plain red. I feel like they could have better done a blue and red kit, this one misses the mark.
FC Cincinnati
Pretty boring, I don’t like the collar. Also, it's a bummer that they’re abandoning the orange; it felt very ‘them.’
Columbus Crew
THEY’RE THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS, CHARLIE BROWN
This joke will be made to death all season (betting the over on Charlie Brown Tifos). It's not as bad as you’d expect with the players actually wearing it, though; it’s decent.
Charlotte FC
It’s cool, I guess, it feels pretty middle of the road for me, and I guess it's better than a ripoff of Arsenal’s 19/20 home kit.
Inter Miami
I’d consider myself a fan of center badges, but this one hits the mark. It feels too linear, with the sponsor not being a very wide logo. This would be great with a normal badge placement.
Nashville SC
The most middle of the road of middle of the road kits, they went safe and fair enough, it looks solid.
Toronto FC
Many people will call it boring, and that’s fair, but I’m a big fan. I am also such a sucker for alternate logos, and I think it carries the kit. (Wish the BMO logo got the memo and was in red)
DC United
When you’ve got a black kit, you don’t need to overdo it; great stuff.
Colorado Rapids
I wasn’t a massive fan when it got leaked by a Nuggets player, but I really like it! Am I going to buy it? Probably not, but I loved that we tried something, and the message behind it is awesome.
CF Montreal
Love love love the inverted colors on the logo, and the line down the side really works for me. (BMO GET WITH THE PROGRAM AND SWITCH YOUR COLORS UP)
St. Louis City
Another one that I’ve heard called boring, but the inversed logo and massive upgrade over last season’s dirty laundry kit gets some bonus points for CITY.
ps: St. Louis, that is not red; it’s hot pink. EMBRACE IT!!!!
New England Revolution
New Egland called this the “Boston Tea Party Kit.” Yeah, ok, man. However, I am a big fan, feels very ‘Revs.’
Minnesota United
This one sparked a civil war in the group chat, but I really like this shirt, it also creates the most unhinged home/away combo in MLS with last season’s Northern Lights kit.
LAFC
Downgrade over the last few seasons? Yes. Still great? Yes. You simply cannot go wrong with black and gold, and LAFC are well aware of that.
(BMO got the memo)
Sporting Kansas City
Return of the classic!!! I love this shirt for SKC, and you pair this with the hoops for their home kit and baby, you’ve got a stew going.
Houston Dynamo
I love it, Houston!!! It's very different but so, so clean. I think they knocked it out of the park here.
New York Red Bulls
YES YES YES. Great stuff. It’s weird while also being very on-brand. I love it.
Chicago Fire
The return to red is finally here, and I love it so much. I think this color works so well for the Fire and takes inspiration from a classic Fire look.
Philadelphia Union
Huge fan of this one. Feel like Philly has really been leaning into the snake the last few years, with the crest last year and the snake skin stripe this year. I love the look.
Seattle Sounders
While I do still think this picture looks like a pajama party, I love this kit from the Sounders. Their rebrand was great, and I think this works great with the more muted green and the blue shorts. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: The orca is on the back of the kit!!!!!! (I am now a firm believer that every team should have a little guy)
ps,ps: Seattle, if you sell something with just the orca on it I will give you my money, simple as that.
San Jose Earthquakes
I loved the EAFC leaks of this one, and it’s just as good now that it’s been released. The throwback logo is awesome and carries a pretty plain kit, but the red for the usually blue quakes is a fun change of pace and homage to the past.
Vancouver Whitecaps
I said before I was a sucker for alternate badges, and oh my, Vancouver. I love this shirt so much; it makes for an incredible anniversary kit.
NYCFC
I give New York City Baseball Club a lot of shit, but I love this shirt so much. The colors all pair so well together on top of the alternate logo, making it a banger.
Portland Timbers
If you’re going to replace the incredible ‘rose’ kit the Timbers have worn the last two seasons, you’ll have to swing for the fences, and Portland stepped up to the plate. This, to me, is a center badge done right, and I love the plant look so much, especially for Portland.
Orlando City
My biggest issue with this kit is that it looks like a different color in every picture. Sometimes white, sometimes pink, apparently violet, always a banger. Orlando’s whole 10-year anniversary aesthetic is amazing, and it’s capped off with this incredible kit with a logo that needs to be adopted as their full-time look.
Austin FC
Simple yet effective. I have been unable to stop thinking about this kit since it was released. I’m a sucker for Austin FC’s whole deal, and this cream kit, great green sleeves, and a gorgeous alternate logo. We’ve got an all-timer on our hands, folks!!!!
I hope you all enjoyed the definitive ranking of every MLS kit for this upcoming season. If you disagree or think I’m wrong, feel free to yell at a wall or something because I am simply correct.
